HEARING ASSISTANCE TECHNOLOGY (HAT) AND COMMUNICATION ACCESS FOR CHILDREN

This session will discuss HAT in relation to 5 goals for children:
•    Awareness of environmental sounds
     .   alerting
     .   waking, doorbell/knock, phone, smoke/CO alarms, weather
•    Communication access in a variety of environments
     .   hearing in noise and reverberation
        .   hardwired
        .   wireless
             .   FM, infrared, Bluetooth
        .   telephone
             .   auditory, visual, combined
•    Access to electronic media
        .   TV, movies
        .   computers
        .   music
        .   classroom technology (e.g., smartboards)
•    Fostering independence
•    Ensuring safety

Individual characteristics of the child/family as well as potential user environments also will be considered in the identification and selection of HAT for children.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dawna Lewis received her M.A. in Audiology from the University of Tennessee and her Ph.D. in Communication Disorders from the University of Nebraska.  She currently works as a Staff Scientist at Boys Town National Research Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.  Dr. Lewis has presented and published on topics involving pediatric audiology/amplification and assistive listening devices, including FM systems.  She received the Editor's Award from the American Journal of Audiology for two 1994 articles on assistive technology in the classroom. Dr. Lewis has served on the steering committee for ASHA Special Interest Division 9, Hearing and Hearing Disorders in Childhood, the Joint Committee of ASHA and the Council of Education of the Deaf, and the Research and Creative Endeavors Committee of EAA.  She also has served as an Associate Editor for Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools.  Currently, Dr. Lewis serves on the Editorial Board of Seminars in Hearing and on the AAA Task Force on Guidelines for Remote Microphone Hearing Assistance Technology.  She is involved in research addressing issues in hearing loss, amplification and speech perception in children. In July of 2008, Dr. Lewis began a 3-year NIH-supported grant examining minimal hearing loss and functional auditory skills in children.
